Hello, and welcome to my fotopic site. This is a collection of digital images taken by myself since 2006. Some images taken before this date may also feature occasionally, but as I have literally hundreds of thousands of images taken before 2006, and as I have mislaid most of the negatives, it`s unlikely that they will all appear on this site, but time may tell!!!

Recently taken photos will feature in seperate groups under 'most recent collections' At the end of each month, some of these photographs will be selected for individual 'class' categories. These can be found in the 'groups' box over on the right....

All photos displayed on this site have been significantly reduced in file size, so may not appear as sharp as the actual taken image. Higher quality images are available on request.

Anyway, feel free to browse, I hope you enjoy your stay!
About Me
I have been taking photographs of the railways for over 30 years now. My first efforts back in the 70`s were certainly no masterpieces, but at least I recorded a little history along the way! I took photography a lot more seriously during the 80`s, but I really wish I took more photographs....

During the late 1980`s, my attention turned to video, although I also took a few photographs alongside. As the 90`s progressed, and there was less on the rails, my interest in railway photography dwindled, although I still took a few shots every now and again......

My first foray into digital photography wasn`t until 2004, but by then, there wasn`t that much left on our current network to get excited about, and that situation has of course, worsened.

Nonetheless, although I certainly don`t put in the miles I once did, I still venture out every now and then, and take photo`s as often as I can. But for how much longer?

I had hoped the new site would be up and running by now, but hopefully it`ll be ready soon. Once it is, I`ll make a post on here, and re-direct this page to the new site. In the meantime, I wish you all a merry Christmas!

No-Thrills November
Just a few bits so far this month, but anything decent has come with bad light and/or bad luck....................

............and it didn`t exactly end very well either, with my last photograph this site will see being of an every day shed. Oh well. Thanks to all those who have been regular visitors in the past. The site will still be here in 'archive form' for a short while.

9th Sep 2009Seven from 'under' the Severn
On Wednesday the 9th of September 2009, we went on a train journey through the Severn tunnel, in search for some freight, and loco hauled passenger duties around Cardiff, Newport, and what`s left of Severn Tunnel Junction! Alas, immense bad luck on the day resulted in pretty much EVERYTHING being Bowled, which is rare for me, as it`s usually the clouds that hinder my efforts! However, 7 shots feature here as some kind of record of the day!

I`LL TYPE SOMETHING LATER!!!!! (Or recent additons - July 2009>)
Thanks to whoever it was who left the amusing comment about my 'I`ll type something later' descriptions which I sometimes leave. Yes, I`ll take it with a pinch of salt, and yes, it did actually make me laugh (a little bit) but I will take this opportunity to remind you all that Railway photography is only a hobby of mine, and I do in fact have other hobbies too, and indeed, other things such as a career which takes up the majority of my time! If I do write 'I`ll type something later.' then it`s simply beacuse I`ve got other, and more important things to be doing, and is not becasue I am lazy! It`s times like this when I shouldn`t even spend time even uploading images (or perhaps even taking them,) let alone typing descriptions for them!!!! Anyway, enjoy these pictures from July! I may re-write this later!!!!

NOT over the moon in June!
A promising start to June with a decent shot of 6L42 on the first of the month, but I was generally too busy to get out and about as much as I`d have liked. When I did get the time, luck typically wasn`t on my side! However, this is what I managed to muster up during June 2009..........

3rd Dec 2008A day out in December

Isle of Wight, and the Lymington Branch........
A family break on the Isle of Wight, with a few trains photographed while we were there. However, I didn`t manage any photos for the first couple of days due to the bad weather! Also a few shots of the green slammer on the Lymington line as we made our way back home via the New Forest.
10th Oct 2008The Cannon and 'Belle' Show.....
The 10th of October was to see the RHTT 'water cannons' move down to Wembley in readiness for the annual RHTT work.

There was also 4 opportunities to photograph the Northern Belle stock behind an EWS 67, as it made an ECS working from Crewe-Northampton Castle, and then heading back north on a circular charter. The first ECS working had obviously worked early, so I missed that, and was in the wrong place for the outward working. My only hope was the return working back to Northampton, as I felt it would have been too dark for the ECS back north......

Of course, there was plenty of other action to photograph inbeteween, including a brace of 86 workings to keep me more than happy!

Sulking in September......
Yes, September 2008 sure made me sulk on a few occasions! Despite a few good sunny starts for the first 4 days of the month, it all went downhill from then on! Lots of bad luck, and lots of grey skies too!! However, a few freights avoiding Northampton was probably the highlight, and these were recorded when I could, even if the weather was rather drab!

Awful August..............
A few odds and ends from a very dull and wet August 2008. However, there were a few sunny spells here and there. The month ends with a long weekend in Belgium, but only a handful of photographs were taken on our final day as we made our way home.

18th Jul 2008A dull and quiet end to Lincolns semaphores
From the 19th of July 2008, the railway at Lincoln is to close for a period of 6 weeks. During this period, the laying of new trackwork will be completed, and the area is to be resignalled, so it`s goodbye to the remaining semaphores, and to the Pelham Street signalbox..... With that in mind, I made a journey to Lincoln on the 18th, but the bad weather, and a couple of freight trains which didn`t run, resulted in disappointment.....

10th Jun 2008Just a short round trip - 10th of June 2008
After a hard mornings work, the sun came out to play, so I decided not to waste this, jumped into the spare car to stretch its legs, and visited Watford village, Brockhall, and finally a LONG wait near Long Buckby. All will be revealed................
8th Jun 2008Long Marston Open weekend 2008
For the second year running, a trip to Long Marston for their open weekend. This time I went along on the Sunday, to say my last goodbyes to many of the 87`s more than to photograph everything that was there. All the same, a few photographs will be put up here, even though every man and his dog will no doubt have almost identical looking shots!

0th Jun 2008Great Central Revisited
About 20 years ago, I walked several stretches of the Great Central line between Helmdon and Woodford Halse. Many photos and notes were taken, but these have been sadly lost. I thought I might try and revisit parts of the line (if still possible) and add records here as and when I can, so keep an eye out for updates............

6th May 2008MAY - The FARCE continues!
Today on the 6th of May, I planeed to photograph 3 particular trains, and needless to say I didn`t manage to get any of them for one reason or another! However, despite perhaps a few too many sheds, the day wasn`t a total waste of my time................

Driving 'BROKEN' Standard Open
On the days of the 8th and 9th of April, I decided to pop out early in the morning for the 5Z47 Derby RTC-Didcot SERCO, which was supposed to be 31601 and a Driving Brake Standard Open. Apparently the DBSO developed a fault, and did not run on either day. Still, as I was out and about, I had to point my camera at something, so here is a small collection of photos I took while on the Chiltern line.

22nd Mar 2008The search for trains in Daventry
Now, I keep hearing talk about trains going to and from Daventry, but as far as I`m aware, the last train left Daventry in 1958. I shall be making a series of visits to this dreadful Northamptonshire town over the next few months, with the aim of finding any of these trains.......
7th Mar 2008Units in the sun!
A quiet Friday, and some sunny spells! A perfect opportunity to catch some WCML freight....... Alas, the clouds had different ideas, and decied to drift past when most freights passed........
Still, I took the opportuntiy to photograph most of the units, some of which may not carry their old liveries for much longer. I decided not to photograph any of those nasty tilting things today...........

1st Mar 2008'One' last look ......?
On the way down to visit the in-laws in Kent at the weekend, a diversion was made to Kelvedon near Colchester to record what was left of the 'One' livery on loco-hauled stock. The Great Eastern class 360 units are also being debranded, so I also photographed some of these during the 2 hour spell. Unfortunately there were lots of clouds around, and as a result, not everything was snapped at!
27th Feb 2008'Roo' with a view
Kangaroo Spinney, Wellingborough, offers a good shot for northbound workings in the afternoon. Unfortunately this location often proved troublesome with the local gypsies. However, their permanant site next to the line has now been demolished, so I thought it safe enough to do some investigating! Unfortunately, just as the sun was right, and there were three freights already overdue, I had business to attend to and had to leave.

26th Feb 2008Cloud dodging at Kings Sutton
Clouds...... No clouds. Sun...... No sun! Yes, it was one of those days today!! I spent a while at Kings Sutton, but unfortunately didn`t bother to record some of the freights as those clouds seemed to pass at just the wrong time!!
12th Feb 2008A fabulous day in February - Fit for Kings Sutton!
With the promise of clear skies, and a few spare hours, I decided to pop over to Kings Sutton. I usually only photograph from the road bridge in the afternoon/evening, but today, most of my photographs came from the damp field and the public foot crossing. I did, however, take my usual position at the bridge later in the day, but no freights decided to show until I had given up and walked back to my car. Oh well, there`s always another day!!!
9th Feb 2008East is East
More blue skies today, so a dash over towards the East Coast to catch the Grand Central HST. A short while was spent at Uffington on the way, and needless to say, three freights passed once I left that location!
8th Feb 2008Dodging the 'Silver' bullets at Shilton......
As the sky was blue, and wind was relatively calm, I decided to go to Shilton for an hour before moving on to catch the 6O60 with the silver bullets. Unfortunately, as I was making my way down the muddy towpath, 4 freights passed including the Silver bullets which were running a good couple of hours early!!!!! If Only I`d have been a minute or two earlier, then I may have produced a photograph. Knowing that I had missed the bullets, I decided to stay a while and to make the muddy walk seem more worthwhile!
5th Feb 2008
to 6th Feb 2008
Harcourt Spoilsports.........
A few hours spent at one of my favourite locations at Kibworth Harcout on the 5th and 6th of February 2008. The first visit turned to disaster as Lots of very big and very dark clouds arrived. However, the second visit produced more pleasing results.
However, it`s still a bit early in the year to get the better shots of the northbound workings, but I thought I`d record some current history before the masses of houses appear in the backgound. At least a certain Mr.Br*wn will be happy...............

1st Feb 2008Elford - 1st February 2008
The first day of February 2008, and I`m off to Elford near Tamworth for a few hours. Most trains in the morning were not photographed due to the position of the sun, which unfortunately did not last all day. A hail storm, followed by snow did not beat me, but the dying light ultimately did............
31st Jan 2008Three 'Sevens' are One Hundred and Two!
On the 31st of January, the final move of 87002, 87022 and 87028 from Wembley-Long Marston took place. The 3 class 87`s previously travelled up as far as Worcester, which is where todays journey began. I decided not to go for the initial working, as I felt it would be too sad to see these fine machines not doing what they did best. However, I decided to make the trip to Evesham today to catch them being dragged to storage. I`ll always have fond memories of these locomotives. These three locomotives have collectively put in 102 years of stirling service on our rails, and could easily be putting in many years more service if it wasn`t for those nasty tilting things...........
19th Jan 2008"Send a scanning crew onboard.........."
".....I want every part of this ship checked." Well, actually it`s still very wet outside, so a few more scans of some old photos.............
16th Jan 2008Around CRICK, if you catch my 'Dirft'
As the sun was shining this morning, I decided to spend a couple of hours concentrating on some departures from Dirft, and general freight passing Crick. Shame half the freights didn`t show up though!
11th Jan 2008Shrewsbury Showcase

31st Dec 2007Scanned and delivered..............
I must have had too much spare time on my hands over the recent Christmas break, as I`ve decided to scan some old photos. Alas, these are only scans from the photograph itself, as the original negatives have been lost since our last house move 5 years ago........... so appologies about the quality.
Anyway, just a small bunch from some of my many thousands of photographs taken over the years, these ones just happened to be left out after some recent research. Hope they may be of interest to someone..............

23rd Nov 2007Harrowden Junction, 23rd November 2007
Today I spent a couple of hours or so at Harrowden Junction. I had hoped to get a couple of south-bound freights in the late morning, but nothing materialised. However, a couple of northbounds were captured, although this is really the wrong location for such shots. A few de-branded Midland Mainline HST and Meridian shots were taken, but I won`t include them all here as to be honest, the shots are all very similar.

18th Sep 2007Definitely not having a field day.....
Today I intended to have 'a field day' by photographing lots of freight workings on the WCML. However, I also intended NOT to have a field day, and decided against standing in the middle of a field, and instead visited a few local stations by train for once........

I would have also captured 87028 on the 1S96, but it was running late and I had to get my train, and frustratingly watched it go past as soon as I boarded.....

16th Sep 2007Little Trains at Rainsbrook Valley Railway
Just for fun, we spent an hour at the nearby Rainsbrook Valley Railway..... Enjoy!
14th Sep 2007Four Tracks - Northants and Bucks
My Schedule for Friday afternoon was quite quiet for once, so I decided to get a few photos on the line between Northampton and Milton Keynes. It was sunny one minute, and menacing clouds the next, so I was hoping for the best!! Travelling between locations meant I missed a few workings, most notably the Grid on the 4O90 which went through Castlethorpe as I arrived, and the 6X77 'Enterprise' which had just passed Ashton upon my arrival. Anyway, I`ll stop moaning now, and I hope there`s something here of interest..........

As the sun was shining on Sunday, I made a short vist to Whitacre Junction, Shustoke, and then Daw Mill to get some Wolverhampton Drags before the diversions end.

However, with a much later than planned arrival, and mostly dull weather on the second day of our short visit, photographic opportunities were few and far between, but here is a selection of photographs covering a variety of workings. Annoyingly, a further 4 freight workings were sighted, but I was unable to get any shots......

I decided to venture over to the ECML to capture 87028 on the Edinburgh Military Tattoo Pullman which made its north bound journey on the 4th of August. Light was far from ideal, but as I made the journey, I was going to take at least a handful of photographs!

23rd Jun 2007Blue Pullman - Grey skies. Later clearing for a nice surprise!
With 87022 set to work the Blue Pullman up the East Coast mainline, I decided to chance the weather, and make the journey to Great Stukeley, near Huntingdon. The skies were grey, but got better as the morning progressed. Before heading home, I decided to get in a few shots near Offord.

17th Jun 2007A short while spent - around Bromley, Kent
I decided to go out to get some fresh air for a couple of hours before Sunday lunch, and visited some favourite spots around Bromley...... The sun was on and off and back on again, but I thought I`d make the best of the situation....
9th Jun 2007Long Marston Open Day
An opportunity to see some of the stored locomotives on site. However, due to the arrangement of many of the locomotives, good photographic oportunities were minimal, so most of these shots are 'for the record'.....
7th Jun 2007Platform Alteration.........
I thought I`d try my luck at Rugby station, hoping that the 1G21 would arrive at the 'old' platform one, rather than the 'new' platform one. As I arrived, it was announced that the 17:47 to London Euston would instead be calling at Platform 2 (The 'old' platform one) So, a new shot, and in the sun too......

I popped over to Water Orton and surrounding area to get some 'Growler' action. Unfortunately, the wait at Lea Marston did not pay off, as the 37 took the other line, but I at least managed to catch it again at Whitacre Junction.
